Hello netsurfers: I am Rakesh and I would like to introduce here some key concepts of molecular biology which actually show as to how our body utilizes genetic material DNA(Deoxy Ribonucleic acid)in forming those wonderful molecules called proteins,which are involved in almost all metabolic processes that takes place in our body.
One of the greatest developments in genomics is the completion of sequencing the complete human genome/popularly termed the human genome project.It has been identified that there are between 30,000 and 35,000(3.5 billion basepairs of DNA) genes in our body.Analysing this information in a wet lab would take a huge amount of time . This has lead to the evolution of a new area in biology,namely BIOINFORMATICS wherein genetic information is analysed IN SILICO and probable protein products are identified in a very short time.As we are trying to replicate a biological process in to the computer,it is very much essential that we have a thorough understanding of what exactly happens in our body.
If this information is properly analyzed ...it would definitely take us a long way in curing a whole lot of metabolic,genetic disorders and cancer for which no cure has been found...........so eventually is it going to be a whole new range of DRUGS????.Lets hope so!!!!!!!!

CENTRAL DOGMA
How does the sequence of a strand of DNA correspond to the amino acid sequence of a protein ? This concept is explained by the central dogma of molecular biology, which states that: TRANSCRIBES TRANSLATES DNA--------------->RNA---------------> PROTEIN
Why would the cell want to have an intermediate between DNA and the proteins it encodes?
.The DNA can then stay pristine and protected, away from the caustic chemistry of the cytoplasm. .Gene information can be amplified by having many copies of an RNA made from one copy of DNA. .Regulation of gene expression can be effected by having specific controls at each element of the pathway between DNA and proteins.
. The more elements there are in the pathway, the more opportunities there are to control it in different circumstances.

UNDERSTANDING MOLECULAR BIOLOGY
It would be litearlly impossible to cover all aspects in molecular biology that is relevant to a bioinformatician at one go.So I decided to concentrate on the following aspects 1.DNA SYNTHESIS
2.TRANSCRIBING THIS INFORMATION ON TO m-RNA
3.TRANSLATION TO PROTEINS
4. A BRIEF INTRODUCTION TO GENE THERAPY

Gene therapy is defined as the use of a genetic material to treat a disease..It comprises strategies to repalce defective genes/DNA or add new genes to cells and tissues, and is being developed for application in the treatment of cancer,correction of metabolic disorders and in the field of immunotherapy.
